Ask and You Shall Receive...

In lieu of the closer this week, I’ll field a question from olKneedlez. Good first post back from your unexplained hiatus (hope you weren’t in Mexico, bud). He poses the question of bringing in the infamous Barry Bonds. His numbers speak for themselves – statistically he is the best hitter of all time. As a stat/math nerd I should be jumping all over this movement to bring him here. But as a baseball purist (I’m a hybrid stat/old school fan – like Glenn Dorsey is a DT/DE hybrid – sweet!) I say NO. I hate Barry Bonds – I hate steroids. I know that hundreds of guys got away with it and I know that Barry is a scapegoat. But I don’t care – I hate him, I think he is a slime ball, and I don’t want him in our clubhouse. I know Whitlock's article quoted players as saying they would be fine with it and even like it. Bottom line: there is a 4% chance Dayton pulls this deal. I’ll open up this thread to Bonds comments if you’d like to opine. I know I got a text from CABG yesterday that said, “If Bonds comes to KC, I’m not going to another game until he is gone”. Strong words, CABG. Strong words.

Well that was an easy game to watch on Wednesday night. Nothing like a nice blowout with your ace on the hill. I guess that offense decided to make an appearance. I’d like to highlight a couple guys and their performance from that game…

Billy Butler - Helluva game for Belly Boy. I said in my last post that his approach has been very solid. He has been very selective up at the plate the last few weeks, but when he would get his 2-1 fastball he was just missing it by fouling it off. People have been saying that Billy was struggling, well not really. I mean Miguel Olivo and Mike Aviles have been struggling. Just watch those guys swing and you can see they are not SEEING the ball well. Billy has been seeing the ball just fine, but we have just been waiting for him to start driving the ball. His OBP was high, but his SLUG was brutal. All it took was one game and he now has his OPS back up over .750. I hope he takes this confidence and runs with it. He had as many extra base hits on Wednesday night as he did all season (3). I also hope Fr. Hillman plays him at 1B EVERYDAY. I don’t want to watch Jacobs there at all.

Mike Aviles - It felt good to see that bat twirl working again didn’t it? This guy has 4 hits in his last 3 games. He was 2-3 on Wednesday night with a 2B and a 3B. Remember when I said that Mike is in his element when he is hitting middle-away. All four of his hits were line drives to the opposite field. Very encouraging. He also drew a walk yesterday, which was his first one since opening day - so that was needed as well. He still has a long way to go, but he is showing strides.

Mike Jacobs - This guy is going to be streaky, I think we have to realize that. He started slow, hit his flurry of HR’s and then came into Wednesday night’s game in an 0-18 skid with 8 K’s. On Wednesday he went 2-3 with a 2B and 2 BB’s. He is now on pace for 56 walks this year. Although I don’t think it will happen, that would be an awesome BB total for the notoriously impatient Jacobs. Maybe Seitzer is rubbing off on Jacobs, but it’s still too early to tell.

Mark Teahen - Hit his 3rd HR of the season and again it went to the opposite field. Have you noticed that when Teahen pulls the ball it is a weak grounder to 2B and when he drives it middle-away its much a much better outcome? Mark is checking in with an OPS of .934 right now and he has gotten on base in 19 of 21 games this year. Umm, the ghosts of 2006 are swirling. Mark, I’m falling for you again, please don’t break my heart like the previous 2 times.

Miguel Olivo - This guy still sucks and always will to be honest. CABG you referenced whether Seitzer could improve Olivo’s approach and the answer is 100% NO. Olivo has a career OBP of .274 which is so utterly pathetic is amazing that he gets paid $3M. He will never have a “good” approach at the plate, it’s just not in his make up. There is nothing Seitzer can do to impact this free swinger of 8 years. He can trust Seitzer all he wants, but he simply CAN NOT execute what is required. Don’t be excited about his opposite field home run the other night – it was his first since 2006! Last year was actually one of Olivo’s best seasons ever and he had 7 BB vs. 82 K’s. Please don’t have expectations for this guy, he will only make you angry. There is no hope for this dope.

I want to touch on Seitzer because there were comments on him in the last Offensive Offense thread. I like Kev-o. He had a great approach in the box as a player (I’m a big fan of approach if you haven’t noticed). I like a guy who looks for a pitch and has a plan of what to do with it. These are my favorite guys to watch at the plate (Butler is my favorite to watch). Few Royals have this discipline and that is something that Seitzer can not change. Guillen and Olivo are incapable of change. Sure they can “hit” the ball better this year, but their approach will not change – they are free swingers at their core. Another intriguing guy is Jacobs. He is a perverse, unapologetic free swinger - it is all he knows. I still don’t think he will become a good OBP guy, but can he improve? Yes, I think he can. The difference is that Jacobs has only played 2 full season of major league ball. Olivo and Guillen have played 8+, so they’ve established their approach. I think Jacobs can still evolve. It will be HARD work for Seitzer, but if Jacobs is a good student and open-minded – he might learn a few things. This will be fun to watch. If Jacobs goes back to doing what he’s been doing, it’s not Seitzer’s fault, it’s just that Jacobs doesn’t have the skill set to adapt. Here are the guys I think Seitzer can make a BIG impact on (in order): Butler, Teahen, and Gordon (and hopefully Moustakas/Hosmer in 2-3 years).

Here is why. The three guys I mentioned above tend to PRESS. These guys are supposed to be the future of our franchise. The Royals marketing team shoves them down your throat. Gordon is the next Brett, Butler can win batting titles, bla, bla. Umm, they did this in the minors, but MLB is a completely different story. Then guys like Mike Barnett and Buddy Bell come along and change their approach. Bell pushed Teahen to pull the ball more and hit home runs. What? Why? Mark Teahen has hit well at every level of career and he did it driving the ball middle away and being patient at the plate. Billy Butler admitted last year that he felt pressure to hit more home runs because of where he was in the line up. People argue that Gordon should’ve gone to AAA for a few months as opposed to starting on Opening Day after only one year of AA ball. We all can see the weight of the world on Gordon’s shoulders every time he makes an out. These guys were thrust into the spotlight and had never experienced failure. As Herman Edwards would say, “But that’s OK!!” How they respond and how the organization responds is the key. This is where Seitzer comes into play. Seitzer will preach until he is blue in the face – “Relax. Don’t change your approach. The hits will start coming”. This is the type of coaching a young hitter needs. Not “Hey Mark, can you try to rip a few more homers to RF on Dodge Buck Night’s?” or “Billy, it’s your t-shirt give away night, how about a deep bomb!” These are young guys who feel pressure and that pressure leads them to change their approach. Not with Seitzer. Not with a guy who executed discipline his entire career. Seitzer had a career OBP of .375 and walked more than he struck for his entire career. The players know this. They respect this guy’s ability. They know he has been there. So when he tells Billy over the last two weeks “Son, I see what you’re going through. You are just missing your pitches. You’re doing a great job of being selective and taking walks, your approach is great right now. Just be patient, and I promise you – the drives will start coming. I once went 3 weeks without an extra base hit, but I kept my approach the same every night. I drew walks to help my team, and then boom! I went on a tear. Don’t worry son, yours will come.” Do you see how that would do a lot more for Billy Butler than Fr. Hillman slapping him on the ass and saying “You’ll get em next time son”. It carries more weight.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that Seitzer is not going up to Miguel Olivo or Mike Aviles or anyone and saying “You need to start hitting this way”. That’s not what a hitting coach does. If he does that, players will turn on him fast. They are an extra set of eyes. They are devil’s advocates. They are therapists. Disclaimer: After Seitzer got fired in AZ, Stephen Drew, Chris Young, and Justin Upton all improved their numbers by a decent margin, and Seitzer was blamed for their first halves. How about the fact that 3 23 year old hitters should improve over the course of the season regardless of hitting coach? Thus is the life of a hitting coach – you will get blamed when hitters aren’t performing and rarely get credit when they are doing well. The difference is that Drew, Young, and Upton are free swingers. That isn’t Seitzer model – that isn’t what Butler, Teahen, and Gordon are. That’s why I think Butler and Teahen can benefit the most from Seitzer. Gordon and Teahen will always have some whiffs, but if Seitzer can get him to go into the box with a plan and looking for something, then I think he can have a positive impact on them.

I think more than anything, I want Seitzer helping these young guys with the mental approach more than anything. That is where I think they need to grow. Let’s see if we can get a little momentum going. By the way, the Royals are currently 7th in the AL in walks. They finished in dead last in 2008 and threatened the major league record. Yes, Coco Crisp helps here – but that is a nice stat for Seitzer fans.

We just need to get more hits with guys in scoring position! Coming into Wednesday night's game, our team BABIP was .272. Remember that BABIP is Batting Average on Balls in Play. It is essentially a batting average only for balls in play (removes HR's and K's). You get your xBABIP (expected BABIP) by taking your Line Drive % and adding 12% points. The league average for LD% is 18%, so an average player should have a BABIP of .300 (a hitter like Pujols has a LD% of 22%, so he should have a xBABIP of.340). The argument being anything over or under your expected BABIP is lucky/unlucky. Our team is hitting line drives 20% of the time which is GREAT. That means our xBABIP should be .320. So do the math: we are hitting .48 points lower than we SHOULD be hitting. This means we have been VERY unlucky. This is why I am encouraged that things will turn, boys. This is a nice silver lining for our struggling offense.

Exit Question: Bonds. Would you do it?

So CABG, you won't go to a game if Bonds is on our roster but you have no trouble going if Jose Guillen is in our line up and goes 0-4 with 4 strikeouts, someone that has been investigated for steriods and most likely is guilty. I am so tired of the Mike Greenberg baseball purists saying that Bonds and the like tainted the game with roids. Who gives a shit, oh right the baseball purists in Kansas City who have not seen a post season game in 24 years because that strategy has really worked. The people who prefer "good guys" to winners. Well for you people I say enjoy sitting next to Kevin Kietzman at the K while you limbo and kiss kam your way into the cellar because you are more concerned with "respect for the game" over winning.

Kneedz - I totally respect and understand your opinion. I've argued with The Dude about this many a drunken night. We always yell and scream, come very close to blows, and never have one ounce of impact on each other's beliefs. I will not budge on my stance on Bonds, I see flaws in my argument (everyone did it, pitchers did it), but I won't change my stance that he tainted the game. When I think about Roger Maris and then I think about Bonds, Sosa, McGwire - I get angry.

I don't fit with the other stat nerd fans that are evolving that accept steroids as a part of the game.

I will say that even though I feel this way, I hope in no way that it puts me in the same boat as Kevin Keitzman. He is an uninformed ass clown who knows half of what the AVERAGE fan knows about the Royals.

I agree with Kneedlez. Do you want to win, or do you want to be a "baseball purist". That fucking term makes me sick by the way. CABG, you told me that 8 of your 11 starters for your college world series team took roids. It was as much a part of the game in the nineties and 2000's as a fat wad of dip in your cheek. "Steroids are as American as apple pie", as famously quoted by the guy with the exploding bicep. Barry Bonds is the best hitter in the history of the game. He would be an asset to our team this year and would give us a much better chance to make the playoffs.

And so it begins...

Sweetums said...

I’m not sure where the argument is going necessarily...Bonds obviously isn’t doing steroids currently (like Guillen I would hope!) so having him on our team wouldn’t be any different than having Guillen on our team, right? I can see the argument that you wouldn’t want him on your team when he was on ‘roids and I can understand that. But he’s not now so what’s the problem? If you think he’s an asshole that’s fine…he is. However, Bonds totally got a raw deal from a bunch of faggot baseball writers and the queen of the douche bags – Bud Selig. Get that bag of bones out of here! Bonds had (has?) the best eye in baseball and I think it would be more interesting than tragic if he joined our team. However, it’s not going to happen and I can’t help but think it would disrupt our team in the long term by limiting Jacobs (my boy) and Butler in terms of development.

Sweetums said...

And to clarify, I don't think Kneedlez and The Dude are advocating the use of steriods but I may be wrong. It happened, it's over with and everyone knows everyone did it so who cares?

CABG - when I said "and so it begins...", I was referring to the fact that the Dude and I constantly fight on this topic. I wasn't directing that at you.

Also, in the spirit of full disclosure: I'm with CABG on this one. May God have mercy on my sould, but I am.

I'm a cranky old man on this debate - again I see the valid arguments from the other side, but I don't care.

And yes, signing Bonds would definitely increase our chances of making the playoffs, but its not happening. Jacobs/Butler will not have their growth slowed for that - not by Dayton.

Got ya Diet Pepsi. No problem...and, May God have mercy on your soul? What is that for? haha

For all of you KC ex-pats, I just wanted to share a nice experience at the K on Tuesday. Boom Boom and I were hanging on the Pepsi Party Porch and I think Overbay may have been the one who slammed one off Meche a little right of center. I thought Boom Boom was gonna have a memento to take home but Coco had a beat on it and slammed into the wall right in front of us to make the catch. It was a really remarkable play and an awesome experience. It's amazing we didn't have more outfield seating before this year. I can't say enough about the place.

Diet Pepsi said...

Nice story Sweets. I was out there opening day and hung out at the Bud Light Party Deck. I saw the Miller Lite Deck from afar. I was unaware of the Pepsi Party Porch. Is that for real or a joke? If real, they certainly didn't contact me for naming rights...

Bottom line: The outfield is beautiful. I was proud to be a Kansas Citian.

Speaking of Boom Boom - where the hell is that cracker?

Also - Is everybody ready for some Fransy today!!

The Dude = Fallon. I will most certainly punch DP in the face over this. Bonds is my favorite player of all time, have about 14 of his rookie cards. And as much as people say he is a douche or whatever, the fans in San Fran love him. As would the fans in KC. I don't think there is a chance it would happen, but I would cum in my pants if it did and fly home for every game. Ha, and by 11 I meant you said 5 fielders and 3 pitchers. So 8 fielders + 3 pitchers = 11 starters, if that makes any sense at all...

CABG said...

Sexual Chocolate (Fallon) good to have you on here. I didn't even know you were on..even though you are probably a seasoned vet. I don't 'hate' Bonds...I just don't wnat to see him in Kansas City. I'd rather have Bonds in KC than Vick. I hate to bring up any Chiefs news on a Royals board...and, maybe I'll be scrutinized for doing so but...I hear the Chiefs are going after Edg. James and Jason Taylor. Props to Scott Pioli and Todd Haley for quickly righting the ship ( I know we haven't played a game yet).

Excellent Win Royals. I want 2 of 3 from Minnesota...including the first one as I've pacted not to shave until we win 3 games in a row.

To answer sweetums question, i am kind of pro roids, it certainly made wrestling and baseball more exciting.

It just breaks my heart that we don't still have Ibanez. Not signing him in '04, more than any other move, was the worst mistake the Royals made in the past decade. It's just too crazy to think about.

It's the equivalent of the Jared Allen trade

I'm with CABG and DP on the Bonds issue but not because of the steroids. Bonds is one of the best players of our generation with or without the steroids but I don't want him in our clubhouse.

First of all, he hasn't played in over a year and will be 45 in two months so we don't even know what he can bring to the table at this point.

Second, I'm one of those weird fans that thinks team chemistry is vital especially in a long season like basketball or baseball (current example: Cleveland Cavs) and I'm not sure how having an aloof superstar would really help. Maybe I'm wrong about Bonds. I clearly don't know him personally, but I don't see a lot of ex-teammates or coaches crawling over themselves to defend him or his personality.

I like where this team is headed and I think adding Bonds would be a negative distraction. I'm not David Glass, Dayton Moore or Trey Hillman so my opinion ultimately doesn't matter but I thought I'd add it anyway.

Lastly, big 3 out of 4 from the Jays. Great bounce back from the Tigers series. Bats came alive a bit...DP, I already mentioned it to you yesterday but I loved the xBABIP stat from the earlier post and I agree we're starting to see some results from the "approach" that Seitzer is preaching. I want 2 out of 3 this weekend and the first step on the way to another winning month.

I'd take Bonds. If we want to get into moral ground here, then surely Jose Guillen is just as bad as Barry bonds, right? I'm talking about ultimately here, like as a person.

Bonds would at the very least give us an OBP above .400. In the DH role he could be just what the doctor ordered. That would mean less ABs for Stinkobs but Barry's OBP would likely be over 100 points higher. That can't be underestimated.

BThom said...

does this spell the end for sir Sidney? i hope so. his splits are just atrocious. Lefties hit damn near .500 against him. you can't pitch in the majors (unless you're jimmy gobble) with that kind of right-left split.
I was kind of dreading this series in minn, and with the Mauer homer, i had a feeling that we couldn't win the game. Great effort and fight though, we almost pulled it off. Tonight will be a huge start for Banny, as we really need to get at least one game from the series.
The bats are finally starting to look a little bit more lively. Confidence breeds confidence, and i think it's only a matter of time before dejesus and crisp really get it going.
Mike Jacobs on the other hand? don't get me started. The only upside to not being able to watch the games on tv, is not having to look at that shit pile on his chin every night.

DP, love the stats like LD% and xBabip. I'd otherwise never see that stuff, because I'm way to lazy to go find it and decipher it's meaning. I've attempted to read the Baseball Prospectus website and usually quit trying after about 5 minutes.

Ponson - Boom..........outta here.

Kneedlez said...

I really don't ever want to see Ponson in a Royals uniform again. Can we please just get Hoch up here let him and Banny see what they can do and actually evaluate the team we have instead of over coaching Ponson's and HoRam's mechanics to see if landing on their heal will keep them from getting hit all over the yard.

P.S. I don't ever want to hear about McClure's landing on the heel thing, is that all he does or does he actually coach. That is the only thing I have ever heard anyone say about McClure.

the mask said...

some strong words coming from a Ponson Pal. I saw most of Sidney's start and thought he was looking pretty good. His pitches were moving pretty well but the batters were just all over them. You can't say he doesn't have any movement on his pitches but maybe he is not deceiving or the ball's movement is predictable and not sharp enough?

Bonds ain't gonna happen. the 4% is pretty accurate. would i take him? darn yes.

Great series, got to watch some of it from bars in Charlotte. We got laughed at when requesting the games be turned on. They changed there tune when they realized that we were with 11 guys and about to spend an ungodly amount of money at their bar (and a friendly reminder that we are in first place).

Going to the game tonight to watch Grienke. I am very excited.

Let's go boys.

I will be there as will a number of other Leskanic's Mechanics. I propose a meet up during the 6th inning on the Pepsi Party Porch due to the still-simmering badd bludd brewing between the Miller Lite Men and the Bud Light Boyz.

Oh Boy, what I would give to meet up at the Pepsi Party Porch in the middle of the 6th tonight. The Miller vs. Bud fued will always be waged, but its nice to know that the taste of a new generation can help unite the two parties.

Mechanic's - Bring the fire tonight and let's get ol' ProZack off to a 6-0 start.

Added Bonus: Due to Extra Innings blackouts - I will be forced to listen the Hawk tonight on WGN. I will be punching things. I hope Greinke keeps the White Sux in the yard tonight so I don't have to hear Hawk's calling card. I will defintely hear a few "He Gone"'s though. Hell, Olivo will give me 2-3 with ease.

New post coming tonight...

I couldn't agree more. The 8th and 9th were rockin' last night. I was standing the entire time during those innings. I almost wanted us to go down in order in the 8th just so Greinke could get back on the mound.

I am sure that most of you watched the game but the box score doesn't really give Greinke as much justice as he deserves. 3 of the 6 hits were touched by infielders (their gloves as a matter of fact). If things were just a little different then take those 3 hits away. Secondly, Callaspo took a terrible route at a ball that fell into right center (I was sitting at the perfect angle to see the angle he took and knew it was wrong from the beginning, but he almost caught up to it). So, potentially take that hit away. Alexei Ramierez was completely fooled on his 8th inning hit which he looped into center by putting dropping his bat on the ball. Can't really take that hit away, but still a great pitch from Greinke. The ninth inning hit landed in about a 15 foot by 15 foot spot on the field (the line actually) in which it couldn't be caught, but nonetheless it was a legitimate hit.

All in all that could have been a 2 hit shutout, but I guess we will just have to deal with a 6 hit shutout.

I was fortunate enough to be able to listen to Greinke's post game radio interview and press conference as well as his tv interview with Goldberg. All were priceless.

That's all I got, let's keep this going.

I was fortunate to be sitting in the best seats I've ever had for the best game since opening day '04. When Betemit came out to pinch, you simply knew he was going to strike out. He knew it, Greinke knew it, and 20,000 some odd people knew it. Exciting stuff. I was disappointed that Callaspo didn't throw a .400 on the scoreboard when it was all said and done but I'll take what I can get.

I was watching the game with my boys in the greinke gang, amongst cards fans. Its nice to have a good product to cheer for, even they were impressed with this squad. I think one facet of this team getting overlooked is the new found patience at the plate. Last night both Guillen and Jacobs drew walks after getting down in the count, that is about as common as a Farnsworth hold. Also,it seems like every hitter is starting to play their game and swing to their strengths. Even bloomy has been tearing the cover off the ball, wich is very bittersweet. Seitzer is doing a great job this year. As far as the pen goes, cruz, soria, and wright have been solid. We just need a loogy to replace mahay, i think his run is over.

As for Stinky Greinke, i think my favorite part of his game is his personality. Last night when chubby butler made a shifty glove flip at first greinke started laughing during the play. I can't decide if he is like forrest gump, or if he is just smarter than all of us and makes us look stupid for taking his words seriously. As Allard Baird said, it literally is JUST a game to him. Thats why he doesn't get psyched out. He is just out their messing around. I also love when he throws in on the sox, its nice to have a tough approach to the white trash sox...
And I'm spent

Enjoys these nuggets...
