Well we certainly had an active week with the comments on the blog. I thought there was some healthy, active debate. Things got a little heated there for a while, but that is bound to happen with passionate sports fans. I really don’t see a problem with it, I say keep it up guys. I think we all understand there are topics that people will agree/disagree on. I think people also know that when they make certain bold comments, that they should be prepared for a wide array of responses. This is something that is bound to happen on an internet message board. I say no harm, no foul. Moving on…
Well, the Royals have finally dropped out of first place. It was a good run. We went 2-4 on the week. Three losses go to the inept offense and one loss goes to Ponson (though he pitched great in yesterday’s loss). The wins were purely the result of Zack Greinke* and Brian Bannister.
*Speaking of Greinke, he has been absolutely perfect. I am pretty upset Aviles ruined his scoreless streak with that awful throw on Friday night. We haven’t seen a Royals pitcher off to such a dominating start since FatElyves Hernandez in 2003. Let’s hope for a different final outcome.
I honestly think we’ll be back in first place at some point this year. I would say that it depends on one major component of the game: HITTING. Our offense is frustrating. If Detroit’s rotation is going to buzz saw through our lineup then this could be a long season. I think the loss of Alex Gordon for 2-3 months is a lot bigger than people think. I’ve seen people saying its not that big of a deal because Gordon wasn’t hitting well anyway. That is dumb. I don’t care if he didn’t have good numbers through his first 20 AB’s. He made huge strides last year and had an OPS+ of 110 - that is stellar for a 2nd year player. People just expected him to put up stupid numbers because that is what we were told he would do. Well, the guy can’t just put on his uniform and then automatically give you .310/35/110. Any way, I never really got to touch on his injury because I was too distracted by our ineptitude at manager. So there is my opinion: this Gordon injury could cost us the division. That sucks because all off-season we’ve been saying that we need Butler and Gordon to make the “leap” this year. We talked about all the hypothetical’s for the season, but the threat of injuries are always ignored and taken for granted by fans. We really need someone to step up and fill his shoes. Honestly, when I say someone, I really mean Mark Teahen. Or Billy Butler.
Here is my breakdown of the offensive (literally) lineup so far this year.
MVP:
Coco Crisp - This guys has been amazing so far this year. He is looking like he might have a career year in his debut season with the Royals. Forget batting average (very overrated stat in baseball), he is drawing more walks than K’s (14 vs. 10) and plugging gaps regularly for extra base hits. Simply, I’m in love with Covelli right now. If he keeps it up we will gladly take his 8.5M option for next year.
Solid Performers:
Mark Teahen - He is hitting the ball to LF again and not forcing himself to be a pull hitter like past hitting coaches demanded. He is getting on base at a good clip and showing decent pop as well. Both of his HR’s were to opposite field, so thank you Kevin Seitzer for letting Teahen hit the way he knows how to.
Alberto Callaspo - This guy can rake. I love watching him at the plate. He rarely misses. He doesn’t take a ton of walks, but his contact ability is off the charts. He needs to be hitting in the 2 hole every day while he maintains this hot streak.
Mike Jacobs - His OPS is solid right now, thanks to 4 HR and 4 2B. He has shown surprising plate discipline. Yes, he has struck out 18 times, but he does have 5 walks (on pace to surpass last year’s totals) and has been doing a GREAT job of working counts. At some point last week, he was top 5 in the AL in Pitches per Plate Appearance. That will not last, but it is a great sign. Everyone and JoPo’s mom has been calling Jacobs a “mistake” hitter, which means he makes his living by punishing pitchers when they miss there location. Since this is the case, its obvious why you want him to see as many pitches as possible. If Jacobs works a count full and fouls a couple off before striking out, that honestly is still a decent at bat. It wears down the pitcher and increases his chances of getting that “mistake” pitch. Keep it up, Mike.
Showing Signs of Life:
Billy Butler - he got off to a gawd awful start, but has recently been taking walks. He is 2nd on the team in walks (10) behind Coco and has been really working the counts lately. The problem with Billy right now, is that he is not driving the ball worth a gosh darn (PG words for Hillman fans). He has 3 doubles. That is it for extra base hits. That gives Billy Ray a miserable SLUG right now. Can’t have that. His svelte figure is not conducive for being a table setter. He needs to be driving Callaspo and Crisp around the base paths. I hope he finds his stroke and starts plugging gaps. I’ve seen encouraging developments, now I’m waiting for the results.
David Dejesus - This guy is going to hit, its what he does. He does nothing exceptional and nothing subpar, so I actually think he is kind of a boring player (sorry DeJesus fans), but I know he is a good ball player. He had a couple nice games this week before struggling on Sunday and I think he will begin to drive the ball again.
Too early to tell:
Jose Guillen - he just returned from the DL and has drawn a walk and got beaned in his first 2 games back. That is encouraging that he is getting on base (also ripped an RBI single on Sunday). I think Jose is due to greatly improve his numbers from last year. The addition of Mike Jacobs and a promising start from Teahen should relieve pressure that Guillen puts on himself to be “the guy”. I’m anxious to see his first full week back.
John Buck - Yes he has had great success numbers wise, but its just not enough for me. I still have seen some bad at bats in key spots. That being said he should definitely be getting more AB’s than Olivo right now. I’m a big fan of riding the hot bat, especially when your offense is struggling. Other than his great hair, I’m still not all that impressed with him.
Struggling mightily:
Miguel Olivo - I’m not a huge fan of this guy. I HATE his approach at the plate - he simply drives me nuts. He probably gives you one good at bat for every two games started. He has 0 walks vs. 17 K’s right now. That is pure amateur hour, Miggy.
Mike Aviles - Boy has he looked really BAD in the box this year. He is still my favorite Royal (I’m a sucker for that stance), but it has been a rough start for my boi. I still think he will be our SS for a couple years and that he will get up to a line of .270/.325/.420 this year. Which is serviceable for a SS, but I’ve said from day one that he will certainly regress this year. He is bailing out of the box quicker than Brady bailed on Moynihan. Watch his front foot when he swings. If he is stepping towards the pitcher and driving the ball middle-away then you’re seeing the GOOD Aviles. When he steps towards 3rd and tries to pull the ball you are seeing the BAD Aviles. He went deep on Sunday so I’m hoping that jump starts something for him. I’m eagerly awaiting his next week.
Backups:
Maier - Mitch played a little bit with Guillen and Gordon both out. I saw some decent things. He looked a ballplayer in the box and worked the counts. He drew some walks in his time, but didn’t drive the ball too well. He will return to limited AB‘s. I like him as a 4th OF.
Bloomy - His numbers have been decent but I don’t care. I’d like him in the lineup as little as possible with the way Callaspo is raking.
TPJ - Who?
We also designated Brayan Pena for assignment when Guillen returned. Interesting because we could’ve sent Maier down because he has options. Though I like Maier on the club right now. We can’t carry 3 catchers any longer. I liked Pena as a player and as a person. I really wish we would’ve tried to trade Buck during his hot streak or Olivo for a bag of baseballs and let Pena be the backup. But that is just me.
I’m worried this offense will keep us from making a legitimate run at the Central. Sunday’s game was a great example. You get 8 IP and 3 ER out of Sir Sidney (Congrats Ponson Pals) and our offense can only muster 2 runs at home against the Tigers. That is inexcusable. Baseball is a long season and you can’t win em all and insert baseball cliché here, but I still don’t think we have the margin of error to waste games like that from our starters. Especially with our numnuts manager (oops, why do I always go back to that).
Exit Question: We all know that our pitching can lead us to an AL Title, but can our offense give them enough support to do it?

Referring back to the question Adam asked about going after Pedro, here is what I have heard… His asking price is still in the neighborhood of $6-7 M for this year. Considering the guy cannot give you more than 5-6 innings it’s highly unlikely that w/ that asking price he will end up anywhere other than NY, Boston, LA, etc. I’m surprised he’s not w/ the Angels already considering their injuries to the starting staff. There is speculation that he is demanding more money than he knows that he can get only to lower his asking price once a clear playoff bound team emerges, or, another good team has some untimely injuries and bucks-up. Ultimately, I just don’t seem him giving us enough value especially since Banny & Ponson have shown promise and we still have Hoch waiting to get called-up.
The offense is definitely going to be the wildcard this year. I checked out ESPN yesterday prior to our 1-run loss, and there were only about 10 teams in baseball w/ a positive Run Diff…the Royals being 1 of them (I think around +6); and Detroit was about +15...with our offense I DO NOT see us keeping this in the black for much longer. It has sure helped that 2 of our starters have combined to give up 3 ER over 8 starts.
As Paul stated, the injuries to Guillen and more so Gordo could prove costly. I just think our batters and line-up needs to find its identity. And by that, I am hopeful that we will start seeing a consistent line-up for a while. I know managers like to occasionally juggle their line-up in hopes of mixing things up, but when one game a hitter is batting in the 2-hole, and the next game the 3, 5 or 6, it’s tough to consistently produce @ the plate when your mind-set and approach changes each game. Hopefully w/ Guillen back from injury we will start to have the same line-up and see if our guys in the middle can start producing.
Paul – I assume you purchased the MLB package. I think that it’s time I extend myself an invitation to your apartment for some ballgames. Thank you in advance.
Mitchell -
Apparently Pedro said in March that he wanted to play for the Royals. I guess Olivo and Guillen were selling him on the Royals during the WBC. That being said, we are not in a position to pay him what he wants.
Now, come late July, if we're still in this thing, then do you take a flier on a prorated $2.5M for two months and playoffs? My answer would be yes. I would think he'd lean towards an LA or someone like that, but who know - that dude is a flake.
I have purchased the Extra Innings package and its pretty amazing. I've been watching the Tigers (mainly Porcello) and Twinkies as well, keeping an eye on the competition.
You are welcome to come by anytime. I'll be watching Banny tonight at 7:10 from the couch.
I'm convinced that's the reason. The brass will tell you it's because Banny's had the better games in Omaha (although Luke's had better numbers). I think they're lying but whatever...I've come to expect that from sports organizations. Not exactly lies but untruths.
But hey, I'm as excited as anyone for Bannister to turn it around if he can.
Yes, it is 95% due to the service time. If we really wanted to WIN this division this year and that was the only factor, then no way you start HoRam over Hoch back in April.
I'll throw 5% to the BS argument the Royals are throwing out there about building Hoch's stamina and improving his numbers when he faces the line up for the 3rd time. Yes these numbers are bad, but HoRam is bad the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd times through the lineup - hell he's never made it to the 3rd time through the lineup.
My understanding is that May 4 is the cut off for us to gain the extra arbitration year. However, Luke could qualify as a super 2 which is for premier young players who are awarded a one year bump in FA. This time line varies and is based on their statisical performance. I've heard late May would protect Luke from the super-2, but I've also heard whispers that we might as well wait until early June to be safe. If Luke comes up May 4 and has a solid year - he could qualify for the super 2. The longer we wait the safer it is.
In other words, as long as that fat drunk Ponson keeps up his serviceable work, we will keep Hoch down in AAA. It also depends on Banny's success and where we are in the standings. I think Dayton would love to hover around 2-4 games out of first through May so that he can hold off on bringing up Hoch.
I'm sure he would too but boy would this POPP be happy watching that lard ass throw gas while sitting comfortably in the Pepsi Party Porch all summer long.
DP, I'd like to see a poll gauging the interest in each new “party area”. I want to know how many Miller Lite Men vs. Bud Light Boyz we’re dealing with. My guess is the Pepsi Party Porch would blow both out of the water.
CABG embraces the name? Wow, didn't see that one coming. I'm impressed.
OK CABG, one good turn deserves another, so I'll go ahead and admit that nobody really told me they hated you. I did get texts along the lines of "who do this guy think he is?", but the word hate was never used. And I don't think anyone ever really wanted you to leave. I know I didn't. I was hoping we could become each other's foils. You know how there is that big debate in baseball between scouts and sabermetrics? I was thinking you'd be the scout/baseball guy and I'd be the sabermetrics/logic guy. Whatta ya say, game on?
Guillen had 2 jacks tonight (should I answer him?)? Is he on the verge of one of his crazy hitting streaks? Couldn't come at a better time really. Let's get back into first baby.
I read Greinke is gonna be on the cover of sports illustrated. First Royal since Bo Jackson. I'm pretty excited about this. Also they talked about him on PTI the other day and Peter King's twitter (no, I don't do that) was heard to be expressing anguish for having to miss Greinke's start while he was in KC covering the NFL draft. All pretty awesome stuff I have to say. I think I like Peter King.
I've been getting boners looking at Crisp's walk totals. I'm basically of the opinion that walks are by far the most important part of a successful offense.
One positive of the Gordon injury: we now get to see if Callaspo really can hit. If Gordon was still around, we might never have been able to find that out. Could end up being invaluable if Callaspo really can get it done.
That was a soft olive branch and I respect it. CABG and Eggs need each other. I was going to write an entire post on the different types of Royals fans and my main case studies were you two. This post will still come.
Great game tonight. Holy Bannister - this could be a real interesting development. I also am a walk enthusiast (it affects by blood flow as well) and that is why I think Crisp is our Offensive MVP so far. 15 walks in 19 games. Pujols-esque.
I have a confession to make. I was annoyed with Bloomquist's very solid game tonight. That is pathetic - but its because I worry that as soon as Callaspo snaps his hitting streak that Fr. Hillman will get Bloomy some looks at 2B. That leads to my thought that I would love to have a routine lineup (though the jacked up lineup tonight worked). If Callaspo isn't hitting 2 tomorrow night, color me baffled.
I hope Meche gets a win tomorrow because he's been screwed out of 2 already this year. He also has had a lead going into the 7th inning in all 4 of his games and has a 1-1 record. That sucks for him.
I like your 2nd lineup, CABG. Also, did I just see the debut reference of Gregg Zaun?
I thought it would be at least August before we had some Zauny chatter on the blog.
Cruz better be out there at the first sign of a tight game - I'm looking forward to it.
Let's go Gil!
So I am sure most of you read Whitlock's column on why the Royals should sign Bonds. Right now why the fuck not, what's the worst he could do. Add a .400 on base percentage to your line up, why aren't we at least considering this option. If the pitching holds up there is no reason to sign pedro or paul byrd, so why not look for a bat, for christ sake Willie Bloomquist started in the outfield again tonight, is there anyone on this blog who would rather see what bonds can do for a few games, then continue watching bloomquist steal at bats from the likes of shane costa and mitch maier.
I was actually thinking to myself last night that Bloomquist doesn't really bother me. He had a great game last night. He handles the bat well. he is batting like 330 and his OBP is over 400. I don't expect that to keep up, but the guy hasn't done anything except misjudge a few fly balls that deserves a bashing.
Luke Hochevar 4 0 1.44 4 4 0 0 0 25.0 21 6 4 2 0 7 16 1.12
Those are Hochevar's numbers right now. 1.44 ERA
16 K's 7 BB's and 4-0.
I am going to start losing respect for Dayton Moore if Ponson gets another start.
