Rough Week for the Boys

Well boys, we had a rough week. We are now 5-13 since our 6 game winning streak. We’ve gone from a 3 game lead to a 4 game deficit. It’s not time to panic yet, but we need to right the ship soon. It is still May 27th right now - so there is a lot of baseball to be played. That being said, I’ve been really frustrated with the past week, especially our putrid offense.

So my favorite Royal Mike Aviles is on the Dayton Moore phantom DL. This is a 2 part dance: 1. Pick a player who is struggling in the big leagues. (This player must be either out of options or a player whose ego you want to protect) 2. Put his ass on the DL which allows you to rest him mentally and then give him a nice long minor league rehab to get his confidence back. I think its amazing how often Dayton gets away with this, I wonder if the league even cares. If you can work the system, then by all mean Dayton - work the system. Now that Aviles is gone for a while, we brought up Tug Hulett. Tug is more of a 2B, but he has dabbled at short (408 vs. 94 career minor league starts). He hit the ball very well in AAA last year for Seattle (.298/.380/.518). He is only 26 years old, but he is certainly blocked by Callaspo at this point. Don’t look for him to play much this season at all as we have Aviles, Bloomy, and Luis Hernandez. Hernandez is also on the squad right now and I was encouraged by his play over the last couple games. He is the no-hit, slick fielding SS that Dayton has been dreaming about for years. He play is equal to the peak of what Tony Pena Jr. can be. He is not a great SS - so please don’t get carried away - hell, he is not even that good. However, he can lay down a bunt and handle the bat at the plate. There is a better chance that Charlie Manson gets paroled in the next year than Tony Pena Jr. executing a sacrifice bunt this season. I really wish we would DFA Pena Jr. once he is healthy. Hernandez is certainly better than Pena and we can’t carry both. Why not just keep Hernandez up as the back up and say good-bye to TPJ? It really makes too much sense.

Another shrewd roster move by GMDM is putting Hooch back down in AAA while we have a couple off days coming up. We only need 4 starters for a couple weeks, so let Hooch go down there for a couple starts for a confidence boost. It lets us maximize the starts from our solid 3 of Greinke, Meche, and Banny. As long as he is back when we need 5 starters again I’m ok with this. He looked to put a little something together in his last start.

Raise your hand if getting worried about Kyle Davies. I’m really getting frustrated with his sloppiness. He wastes a TON of pitches. I thought he might have figured something out last September, but he is reverting back to his sloppy laboring ways at times. He is still young and shows flashes, but man - does he need some consistency or what?

Gil Meche looks like he has back issues again - I’m terrified that he has a DL stint coming up. At the least, I’m pretty confident that he is hiding an injury from the powers that be. Troubling…

OK, enough of the depressing pitching talk. Zack Greinke is a freak. I’ve been waiting for him to cool off from his ridic start, but now I’m wondering if it will happen. I honestly could see him having an ERA under 2.50 this year, maybe even 2.00 if things get crazy. His repertoire is filthy right now. He is throwing every pitch with great control and nasty movement - it isn’t fair really.

Mark Teahen has been really struggling lately. He just came off a 1-22 stretch and dropped his OPS back down to 2007-2008 Teahen range of .750. He did have a big game at the plate on Wednesday and got that number back up to .794 thanks to cracking his 6th HR. I hope he can get back on track (along with Crisp and Callaspo who are also slumping right now).

This week is huge. We have 3 at home against the Sox followed by 3 @ Tampa Bay and then 3 @ Toronto. That is a tough stretch, however the pitching match ups are decent. Chicago is gonna throw us 3 straight lefty’s in Richard, Buerhle, and Danks. Richard owned us out of the pen in Chicago opening week, but that was a 2 inning outing. Buerhle is always going to give us a challenge. I’m hopeful that we will be locked in against Danks as we’ll be seeing a lefty for the 3rd straight game. Billy Butler and Jose Guillen are the KEYS to the next three games. Olivo needs to be a factor as well. These three guys crush lefties and if they don’t pick up the slack of Jacobs, Teahen, and DeJesus it will be more ugly offense from the Kansas City Royals Baseball Club. We’re throwing Banny (whose been awesome), Meche, and Greinke against the three lefties so we really need to take two and honestly - I like match up in every game and think we could be due for a nice sweep. It all depends on the offense - it has to be said. Though I guess when you have the best ERA in baseball and have a 5-13 stretch, you are allowed to point fingers.

Exit Question: Detroit Rotation: Verlander, Jackson, Porcello, Gallaraga, and Willis. There are a couple "if's" in there and a couple guys over acheiving, but if they stay on, we are in BIG trouble. Is Detroit's rotation going to keep us from competing?

Good stuff Mr. D.

On first glance, I'm not as high on Detroit as most are right now. Yes, there is a possibility that all of those arms keep down this road and form an excellent rotation. However, who wants to bet on Willis (major mystery for the past couple years), Porcello (pitching above his head at 20 years old, can he sustain it?) and Jackson (very nice last couple of years but isn't for sure yet). What Verlander is doing scares me. I left him for dead after seeing a poor start this year following last year's debacle. Gallaraga is solid and a nice piece on the back end.

Detroit will be dangerous if they continue to let Josh Anderson play - yes, that's what I meant. He's covering tons of ground in the outfield, hitting .300 and has stolen 10 bags. Davies picked over about fifteen times yesterday and cleary had his attention diverted. Anderson and Granderson compliment the middle of their order well.

I still don't think they run away with this thing - there's a reason they performed like they did last year.

After Meche's last start I incorrectly predicted a DL stint. He manned up and admitted his own poor performance. My Royal blue glasses say that this year will be like last and he'll finish on a tear. By the way, his ERA is 4.55. Certainly not what we've come to expect, but he dug a much bigger hole last year.

We need Soria back ASAP. He changes to whole identity of the pen.

Where are the people who said one week into Gordon's injury, let's trade Gordon - the team is playing well, the offense is rolling and we can't move Teahan off third?

It is still a way's off, but Gordon could provide a nice boost for the final couple months.

In the meantime, Davies is hard to watch. Ramirez belongs as a middle relief guy on the T-Bones. Butler, although still not hitting for major power, has performed far better in the three hole than anyone over the past five years. If he can settle in and hit .290 15 and drive in 90 I'm fine with that. As we are seeing with Mauer, sometimes the power develops later.

Maybe wishful thinking, but I'm seeing some signs from Mr. Belvedeer.

Huge stretch coming up. We need to at least tread water in the next two weeks. If we go and fall 8-10 games back, we'll be fighting up hill the rest of the way.

Big division series coming up...

A huge stretch is coming up, but I am losing faith in this team. They have no leadership, what the hell is Dejesus doing. He sucks. I am ready to part ways and make room for Maier or a free agent signing. This team does not have the horses and I am willing to think that this team could finish last in the central. You guys are going to pull your hair out over that but seriously, there are no sings of life on this team.

We basically have a two man outfiled whenever guillen plays, he can't get to anything. We have a two man rotation, Banny and Grienke, and we do not have a legitemate 1, 2, 3, or 4 hitter. Maybe Callapso is a legit 2, but other than that this team is falling fast, and I don't think Hillman or the return of Gordon and Soria can do much to help it.

Soria usually needs a lead to be effective and we can't get leads unless we are facing a loser like Todd Wellemeyer.

I like that Wellemeyer......joke...... I can only assume you are poking fun at the fact that the guy who was affectionately known in some circles as "Stink Bomb" pitched 6 shutout innings against the Royals last weekend.

Also, kneedles, that post perfectly summed up all my thoughts on the Royals at the juncture.

It's just depressing to think about

Grapes, this is the first time we have agreed on anything regarding the Royals, and not to be debbie downer, but I am seriously preparing for a last place finish this year. If I am right, i certainly hope I never see Trey Hillman in a Royals uniform again, send his ass back to Japan with the small ballers and curve balls in 3 - 0 counts.

you are totally crazy to be talking about playoffs at this point. boy oh boy, talk about optimistic. these guys be.....stankIN. This is classic royals. We always (ALWAYS) seem to have one thing working and two (three?) parts not. These last three games back been gawd-awful. If a starter throws a decent game then either our bats, defense, or bullpen will blow it. (really, you can switch any of those parts in the sentence and it works perfectly).

as if things couldn't get any worse. our biggest and prolific bat hits the dl.....yes, bigg batt buckk

We need to bring back John Thompson to stop the bleeding!

I've heard reports that Dayton has put a soft feeler out to Scott Elarton to see if he can be coaxed out of retirement. This would certainly help ease some of our pain.

I really like John Buck, but the guy has no business playing Major Leauge Baseball...none. Brayan Pena will prove he's a Major Leaguer and will prove he should be the starter for years to come....but, can his defense hold up?

I'm sick and tired of this type of baseball. I'm tired of going out and worrying if we'll score at least two runs. Bottom line is this: The starting pitching has done it's job. The bullpen (for the most part) has done it's job. It's time for our leaders, our go to guys...to step up and lead this team to WINS. I'm not saying this team has a good defense...in fact, it's well below average. But, when Gordon returns..we can be an average baseball team defensively.

Let's right the ship Tuesday night...nobody thinks we can go in and win the series at Tampa Bay. It's baseball...WE CAN WIN ANY GAME WE PLAY. We're talented, and we can turn this damn thing around....and, I think we will.

1) I wish I shared CABG's optimism, unfortunately this is starting to look like Royals baseball I've seen before.

2) I've always said defense was way overrated. These Royals are doin' their damndest to make me eat my words.

3) Of course Mike Aviles was a mirage. Of course he was. Looking back, we were foolish to let ourselves get so excited about Aviles. Won't be making that mistake again.

4) I'm looking for Ponson to take more of a leadership role in the clubhouse. Did somebody say player/coach?

Defense is extremely important to winning. And, the Yankees are proving that. Yes...having 220 mil and AROD back in the lineup is helping A LOT! But, wow...what a streak they are putting togethr. Also, the Twins are once again atop the league in fielding percentage. These types of things matter a lot...if the Royals could play Twins Defense and pitch like we can...we'd DEFINITELY have a better record. But, unfortunately we don't...and won't. However, I think we can hit better than the Twins if we get a solid Gordon back and get a 'little' more aggressive at the plate. We have a lot of poor 2 strike hitters. Jacobs is arguably the worst 2 strike hitter I've seen in a LONG time. And, I love the guy...I'll still take him in the lineup everyday!

Hillman Bashers:

I found an intresting article, and 'ratio' that was created to track how successful a manager uses his bullpen. This goes much more in depth than 'protecting leads', but rather how/when a manager uses certain bullpen pitchers. According to the report..Hillman (and McClures) UR rating is 0.25 percent which ranks him 9th in the MLB in managing bullpens.

Again, I'm sure there are some unidentified aspects of the game that this guy doesn't consider, but from this created statistic, Hillman is well above average in regards to managing the bullepn for a Major League Manager. Even if this report is off...it's obvious Hillman knows what he is doing.

The moral of the story...the pitchers are the ones costing us (even though managers put them in the game..I know this)....not the manager.

CABG -

I know a guy who made up a formula that says Hillman is a garbage manager.

Moral of the story - Hillman sucks.

You see what I did there? I gave you absolutely zero information and then pawned it off as the entire basis of my argument. I took that from this great book I'm reading "How to win any argument" author: CABG.

C'mon now CAB - if you're going to use a ratio as a source, you need to provide some actual data on how it was created. At the very least, provide the link to the report so we can do our own research.

CABG - I asked you to either describe it or send me a link, so if it will take too long, just cut and paste the link - thanks.

Sounds interesting though: a "proven success" - does that mean if he makes the right call on paper he gets credit, or if the player actually executes he gets credit? "Where they belong" - how is this quantified? These are the things I would like to know...

PS - I think this is a great idea. As we've all learned on this blog: When CABG puts pen to paper (or fingers to keys), hilarity ensues. I look forward to your novel comprised of your succinct, well organized thoughts. I assume the forward will be penned by none other than Tobey Gardenhire?

Seriously, will you please provide me the link to this article. I want to see how many points you get for bringing HoRam into a tie game with two men on base.

Thanks
