Well – good news Bullpen Boys – we’ve had a few movements in the comment section and are picking up a little steam during the mid-summer classic break. First and foremost, CABG (Cabbage, or Cabby) is back! I thought you had some solid posts this week Cab, and even took your blue tinted glasses off on a few – it’s refreshing to hear that every now and then. I know we were all convinced that he’d never return, but he pulled off quite a shocking return (almost as impressive as Roy Hobbs comeback after that crazy, gun-toting woman ended his pitching career – easily the worst women in the history of the world – Susan Smith excluded for lack of being a human). Speaking of women who own guns, I’d like to formally welcome Lindsey to the board – strong first post that included a NKOTB drop. Finally, Ol’ Bubba returned with his first post since the inaugural post back in February – and he didn’t disappoint. A strong post with characters spilling on to 3 separate posts that probably made CABG green with envy like the Wrigley Ivy. Very good breakdown of the recent trade Bubba – my initial reaction was identical to yours. Though, some of you might be upset to know that I’ve softened on this deal (still dislike it though). I’ll touch on this further in the post.
So, I was putting the finishing touches on a nice little sabermetric post (I’m excited to discuss this post with you all – it will have to wait though), when Dayton Moore abruptly put my brain down for the count. I literally had a brain spasm when I saw the news about the Yuniesky Betancourt trade. The Royals have been linked to Yuni (as Fr. Hillman will certainly dub him) for a few years now. There are rumors (with pretty decent traction) that DM offered Billy Butler straight up for Yuni about two years ago. Thank God that Bill Bavasi was easily the dumbest GM in baseball and turned that down. I actually had one fellow Royal fan say, “This trade isn’t so bad, at least at wasn’t Butler!”. That's sad. Even sadder, Bavasi was fired and Seattle’s new GM is very well respected and pulled off a nice little trade on Dayton. Anyway – what did we give up? AA Pitcher Dan Cortes and Low A Pitcher Derrick Saito. Saito was just drafted last year and has really good K numbers this year, but doesn’t project to anything more than a LOOGY – so that’s fine. Cortes, 22, is much more interesting however, as after a very nice year in AA last year he was our #1 rated pitching prospect coming into this season (rated #3 overall behind only Hosmer and Moustakas). This year he is repeating a 2nd year in AA, he has had a disappointing season for a #1 pitching prospect, but still sports a 3.92 ERA and is still said to possess his great “stuff”. His two main problems are harnessing his stuff and harnessing his partying. Dan Cortes is famous for a couple internet photo’s in his day. He was once photographed naked passed out on a toilet with a bottle of booze at his feet (something Diet Caffeine-Free Mendota Springs Lime aka Curt does from time to time up here in the Windy City). He also has been photographed on the net with a bong in hand as well (shockingly, this didn’t create as much attention as Michael Phelps toking saga). Finally, just last week he was arrested for drunk & disorderly when he peed on a fence while stumbling outside a bar. Wow, and to think this guy had control problems? Thank you, thank you - I'll be here all weekend, please tip your watiresses. Now you know the details, so let’s break it down.
You’ve probably read some info on Yuni in the past few days. Bubba laid out some good info in his comment as well. To summarize: Betancourt WAS a decent Cuban prospect when he came up at age 23 in 2005 with the Mariners. He was regarded as a free swinger who could hit for a decent average and was said to have plus defense. Since then we’ve learned that he can hit for a decent average (.279 Career BA), not get on base at a good average (.302 career OBP), and his defense has slipped considerably (consistently ranks at the bottom of AL shortstops). I will say that in 2007 he banged out 38 2B’s and 9 HR’s, so that is pretty decent pop out of the SS position. Problem is that Yuni is 27 so it’s hard for him to completely overhaul his skill set at this point (especially when its trending down). I think that is my biggest beef with the trade. Dayton tried this same thing with Mike Jacobs. He takes a player with over 2000 career AB’s (who was once regarded as a hot prospect) who has not lived up to their potential. He then trades for this (somewhat expensive) player with something we have depth in. He traded our deep bullpen for Jacobs in search of power (not working out to well) and now he has traded from our minor league SP depth in search of an everyday SS (time will tell).
I’m going to tell you why I don’t like the trade and then I’ll throw out a few qualifiers that brought me down off the ledge. I don’t like this trade because:
1. This is more evidence that DM really isn’t that good at putting together an offense. Betancourt has a career OBP of .302 and DM has been giving lip service about how he values OBP. Prove it – bring in a player with a good OBP HISTORY. Not potential – HISTORY. I know those are expensive or hard to find, but just humor us and find ONE.
2. This quote in response to being told Betancourt is rated very poorly defensively. "The defensive statistics - I still really don't understand how some of those statistics are evaluated, I really don't. When you watch baseball games every single day, it’s very apparent who can play defensively and who can't." Ok, obviously CABG will defend this quote and yes, even I have admitted that defensive statistics are fairly new and not as objective as OBP – but damn, Dayton – that sounded really, really bad. You don’t “understand them”? Tell me you think they’re unproven or that you think they’re too subjective, but please don’t tell your fan base you “DON’T UNDERSTAND “ a statistic (especially when 5 minutes later in the interview you say that you have a sabermetric team – to which I say: BS!)
3. Dan Cortes still had value and I think he could’ve gotten Betancourt for far less. Seattle had vocally expressed their frustration with Yuni and everyone knew they wanted to get rid of him – though I assume throwing in Cortes helped Seattle pick up some of the salary. If you wanted to send other players a message but shipping out Cortes after his recent arrest, I understand that – but I think he could’ve been a piece to a bigger deal as he still has pretty good stuff for a 22 year old prospect.
4. There have been recent reports that Yuni has a bad attitude and that teammates don’t like him. His work ethic has been questioned more than once. This really surprised me that Dayton would take a guy like this – shows how desperate he is to find a SS.
Dayton has a problem with taking has-been prospects and thinking he can “rescue” them with a change of scenery. I’ve tried this with a couple girls in my past with not very good results. You think you can change them, but you really can’t. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it’s very tough. However, in his defense I know why he does it. Due to the Royals budget constraints he needs to find a Carlos Pena (TB picked him off the scrap heap after everyone said he was done), take a chance on a Carlos Quentin, and find a gem like that. He needs to find one of these guys and partner them with our young talent and hope for a nice run like the Rays had. It is very hard to do this. He tried and ultimately failed with Jacobs – now he is trying again with Betancourt (on a much smaller scale he would admit). It probably won’t work with Yuni either, but that is why he is doing it. He probably hopes Yuni can do .290/.310/.420 and play adequate defense and honestly in today’s non-steroid era (I think?) that is passable for a SS. BTW - You see you don’t need an .800 OPS for a SS – but you certainly need it from a DH Mr. Jacobs!!
Another factor to realize is that the Mike Aviles injury debacle was a really bad thing – between Mike not speaking up and then our inept staff misdiagnosing a Tommy John injury – and this trade is a fallout of that injury. Make no doubt about it. That put DM in a bind. He now has to choose between Willie Bloomquist, Tony Pena Jr., and Luis Hernandez to play shortstop at the Major League level. My first reaction to the trade was to just to ride out this season with Bloomy at SS and get a FA in the off-season. Dayton said he thought about doing this, but his choices would be:
Orlando Cabrera (35)
Alex Cora (34)
Craig Counsell (39)
Bobby Crosby (30)
Adam Everett (33)
Chris Gomez (39)
Alex Gonzalez (32)
Khalil Greene (30)
Jerry Hairston Jr. (34)
John McDonald (35)
Marco Scutaro (34)
Miguel Tejada (36)
Omar Vizquel (43)
Jack Wilson (32)
The only viable names out of there are Marco Scutaro and Jack Wilson. Scutaro (34 next year) is in a contract/career year and has been boringly below average up to this point in his career – he will command at least over $6M a year next year. Jack Wilson is highly overrated (32 next year) and his bat is actually a couple ticks worse than Betancourt – he too will cost over $3-4M per year. The two 30 year old's Greene and Crosby suck worse than Betancourt. Also don’t forget how HARD it is to get FA’s to come to the Royals. We offered more money to Orlando Hudson this past offseason only to see him sign with the Dodgers. This rules out a player like Tejada from the list. Until we start winning, this will remain the case. The book is closed on 2009 FA's in my opinion.
After the 2010 season, JJ Hardy (28 in 2011) of the Brewers (.264/.325/.435) becomes a free agent and I like him despite his current struggles this season. The problem with Hardy is that he will command over $6-8M per year most likely AND we’d have to go another full season with Bloomquist/TPJ. That is a lot of money for us as well. Yuni will cost us $7M for the next 2.5 years after the Mariners chip in their $$, so he really doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Also, as I said above, it’s not a guarantee that Hardy would even sign with us.
Ok, so those are some things I feel needed to be pointed out. That, yes Yuni will probably suck for us, but did we have other alternatives? I just wish he would’ve done this for something less than Cortes (even with his stock dropping pretty quickly). Basically, the Mike Aviles injury royally Effed the Royals. Well, that and the fact that the SS anointed before him was TPJ – so that is on you Dayton. The fact that this clown is still on the team makes me more upset than anything DM or even Baird has ever done in my life. He is statistically one of the worst hitting players in the history of the game – that is 100% fact. Please swallow that nugget (settle down The Dude – didn’t mean to get you excited) when you think of Hillman trotting him out there on a MLB field 40 times this year!!!!! Blue Steel? Ferrari? Le Tigre? They're the same face! Doesn't anybody notice this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! If he is not cut when Yuni and Gordo are activated – I will consider quitting life.
Speaking of Gordo, he is RAKING down in the minors and should be ready for Friday. So with Gordo and Yuni in the infield we can move Teahen to OF and sit Guillen and Platoon him and Jacobs at DH and if Butler heats up, and if Hooch and Banny keep pitching well, we can go on a little run! There is the inner homer in me…
Exit Question: I know you didn’t like the trade, I didn’t either (I’m sorry for somewhat defending it), but does anyone have any other viable options we could’ve done over the next year or two at SS?

Diet Pepsi,
Great post. I think looking at the SS options, the Betancourt trade is understandable and even tolerable, yet nothing to get excited about.
The only way i have been able to convince myself that this may not be a total disaster, since I hate to see Cortes go, is that maybe Melville and Crowe are further along than we think, and are rotation could very soon be anchored by Grienke, Hoche, Banny or Meche, and those two young studs. That kind of gets me excited assuming that we are going to have to part ways with either Meche or Banny.
maybe that is delusional, probably is, but its what i am telling myself so i can sleep at night.
PS - I know this is kind of a royals blog, but is there ever going to be any MU football chatter around here?
Kneedlez - Even more good news regarding our pitching in the minors is that Danny Duffy and Mike Montgomery are even higher rated than Melville right now. I'm working on our minor league review right now, and Dayton has done a GREAT job on pitching depth.
Regarding MU Football - I really do not want to discuss that here. Especially with CABG, because it is beyond unbearable talking about MU football with him. I have toyed with the notion of creating a Mizzou blog for football/bball, but man that means I'm a complete loser - I still might do it though.
CABG - thank you for deleting your post - please don't do that here - I'd like to keep this Royals and not punch my computer hearing you talk about the SEC. Thanks
PS - I'm not attacking you, I'm joking with you - seriously don't start talking about college football, please.
With CABG being a kansas fan, the last thing I want to do is hear any of the pathetic border war back and forth.
Royals baseball it is.
I am going to go ahead and back this trade. I don't give a crap about two minor league pitching prospects. I'm sorry. I just don't. Also, lots of people counted Teahen down and out a year ago, I never lost faith in him. I am going to trust DM and hope that Yuni plays like the stud he was supposed to be a few years back. Let's be honest, TPJ needs to go, and if this is what it took then so be it. You will never see Saito or Cortez make any impact whatsoever in the bigs - mark it down, that is as good as fact. But, Yuni will make an immediate impact with this team when he is healthy enough to play.
Grapes
Grapes, that was maybe the worst trade analysis I've ever read. And I hardly see what Teahen has to do with this. Seems to me you were just seizing another opportunity to pat yourself on the back for (silently)sticking by him. DP, could we maybe get a note on the sidebar about how Grapes has always stuck by Teahen? Seems we need a reminder.
JK buddy, although I do take some issue with your "that is as good as fact" statement. Not so much the actual opinion, because you very well may be right about that. But the opinion is actually not "as good as fact". Far from it. It's actually the opposite of a fact. It's just your guess. Not even an educated guess, seemingly. In other words, not something we should be taking to the bank.
This was a really bad trade, gang. Betancourt is one of the worst players in the league. We essentially traded prospects (good or not) for the right to flush millions of dollars down the turlet. I'm no fan of Bloomquist, but he would've been a much better stopgap option at SS.
Funnier Star headline?
Royals acquire Freel to bolster struggling offense
or
Acquiring Betancourt creates new lineup possibilities
How much you guys wanna bet Betancourt hits 2nd for us while maintaining OBP below .300?
Fellas, I've done my share of arguing and debating. But, I must admit...I have recently purchased a Bill James book and began reading it. It's quite interesting and a unique outlook on things. Although I will always hold 'baseball' knowledge above sabrematics...I've definitely adopted sabrematics as an important facet of the game. Over the course of time...numbers don't lie. I will agree with that...as that is a fact. It can't be debated.
After some long hard thought...I'm open to WHATEVER will enhance my baseball knowledge, and I think Bill James has some VERY unique outlooks on things...and positive ones at that.
Cabby
CABG reading Bill James?!? Holy shit dude, I'm legitimately impressed. Reading a book by the godfather of the mindset you used to be totally against. I believe thats whats referred to as "being the bigger man." Seriously, that displays a very open mind. I don't know that I'd ever be able to bring myself to read a book about the old school formula. Kudos, man. For real. That just made my day.
If CABG can do this, why not Dayton Moore? Scouting and baseball knowledge are obviously necessary to build a team, but there is just no reason not to at least KNOW sabermetrics, regardless of how much emphasis you place on it. Like I said before, get a guy who's spent his life around baseball to embrace sabermetrics and you've got yourself a perfect baseball mind right there. Maybe we should get ol' CABBY a job in the Royals front office.
That should've read, "there's no reason for a GM not to at least KNOW sabermetrics...."
forgot the GM part.
DP – glad you mentioned the pitching depth. Hopefully your minor league portion will cover guys besides the mentioned, but Montgomery, Melville, Duffy and Crowe (sign the guy so another year isn’t wasted, please) are a solid core. History says maybe, maybe one will be what they are billed to be, but forget history. You have to hope that two are legit rotation guys with one having the chance to be on the upper end.
The huge debate on the trade for Yuni is all misguided. There are those that seem to bash the “trade” by tearing down Betancourt without looking at the other side. I wish I could say that we have no reason to make this trade, but I’ve seen enough of whatever it is we have run out there to this point. In my eyes, it is an upgrade because it is change.
The biggest mistake that Dayton can make is thinking that shortstop is now set for even the next two years. DP’s breakdown of what else is available is very good, but a keen GM should find a way to bring in a challenger next year (possibly someone in the minors on the cusp now). I have no problem with the deal unless we settle in for three years of Betancourt without forcing him to perform to keep his job.
I do get tired of the 15 deals we have with people between $2-5 mil. It’s been said a million times, but Kila and anyone could have done what Jacobs and Farnsworth have done. Here’s another couple mil to Betancourt. Please make your bang worth it – pay a little more to get the right guys.
Strong second half coming – DM ditches conventional thinking and trades Teahen for two solid prospects, Zack wins the Cy with 19 wins, Soria’s healthy in the second half as the club plays slightly over .500 ball, Butler stays on the same track with plenty of doubles and solid overall numbers, Gordon hits 15 goodnights and I continue to dream of the day when this team becomes a player again.
Eggs - Would you be fine with Bloomy as a stopgap through 2010? 2011?
I wanted him to trade for another SS (Escobar), but DM said "It's hard to trade for someone, when they're not available" - not sure if that was referencing Escobar.
Cabby - pretty earth shattering news my friend. I'm excited for you. Now, if only Dayton could take "the leap".
Johnny - I like your point about bringing in some form of competition for Yuni.
I'm torn on Banny, he is pitching very well and the tailing action on his fastball is much different than a year ago. Do we keep him around as a solid #3, or move him for bats while his stock is very high? Fun fact: Banny started this season in OMAHA - that's how high we thought of him...
I appreciate the words of encouragement Eggs/DP. Sweeney....excellent post. I thought you made some excellent points in regards to competition. I'm currently blogging from the Big Apple. It's always a treat when Sir Michael Cleary or Meehaa is holding a cold beer just a few feet away. I best get going...go Royals.
The previous post was from CABG..I just noticed that Cleary is still signed on...

Response to DP,
First of all, your question about whether I'd rather have Bloomquist than Betancourt in 2010 assumes we couldn't have gotten another shortstop in 2010, which is by no means a forgone conclusion. As it turns out, Boston was willing to trade Julio Lugo (who is comparable to Betancourt on D but significantly better on offense) and pay almost all of his salary. So if we could've gotten a better player for less money this year, who knows what we could've done before next season. Traded for a decent AAA shortstop perhaps? That would be a much cheaper option, and seeing as how Betancourt's RAR(runs above replacement) is actually a negative number, a AAA shortstop, even a mediocre one, would probably actually put up better numbers than Betancourt too.
As far as 2011 is concerned, come on man, thats a pretty serious reach. You're saying its either Betancourt or nothing until 2012?!? I don't buy that, and I don't believe you do either. The argument can be made that we couldn't have found a new SS before next year (it's wrong, but it can be made), but saying we couldn't find someone else before the 2011 season is asinine.
However, putting all that aside and just taking your question at face value, yes, I would rather have Bloomquist than Betancourt in 2010 and even in 2011. Bloomquist's numbers, offensive and defensive, are significantly better than Betancourt's. Not only that, Bloomquist has been trending up while Betancourt has been trending down. Do I want Willie Bloomquist as my starting shortstop? Of course not. Do I think he's preferable to Betancourt? Absolutely.
And I don't buy the "he's an improvement over Pena, so this is a good trade" rationale. Sure, Betancourt is a better hitter than Tony Pena, but he's still not a good hitter. He's a bad hitter. A really bad hitter, actually. No power, no speed, sub .300 OBP. Terrible. If we were assigning grades, Tony Pena would get an F, no question. The problem is, Betancourt would also get an F, just a slightly higher F. Upgrading is good in theory, but not if you've upgraded to a player you still can't win with. Given Betancourt's contract and the fact that we gave up prospects to get him, he actually has a negative value to our team. Trading for him made our chances next year(and beyond) worse, not better.
That's not even the worst part of this trade. The worst part is that is basically confirms all my worst fears about Dayton Moore.
Sorry to be such a wet blanket(again). Hey, maybe our boy Yuniesky really did just need a "change of scenery".
PS that picture of Mahay is totally hilarious. What a dork.
PPS I hate to say it, but I also think we should trade Banny. Its hard to see his value being higher than it is right now.
I think I may be throwing in the towel with Royals this year. The last two nights were so hard to watch that I pretty much didn't (lots of channel changing and leaving the room especially in the late innings). God forbid Soria (can't even remember the last time he threw in a game....a week ago?) pitch 5 or even 6 outs to get this team a win.
Hillman had some classics in the post game interview and 810 ripped him apart afterwards. He made some of the most hypocritical comments ever. Something like not selling his soul to just to get a win. This was in regard to putting Soria in. He mentioned that he has been hurt, yada yada, but what did this same retard do with Meche....oh yeah.....he let him throw 130+ pitches after being hurt.
Hillman said some other stuff too, that isn't coming to mind.
Basically, I really don't think I can take this anymore. I was really excited about the second half and the Royals have done more than enough to crush any hope in just two games.
grapes
Read Rany's post from today. He says what I said, just WAAAAYYYYY better.
Grapes
Cuz-
I'm glad to see you found some more time to enlighten us with your royals insight...the insurance world's a bitch. Pretty sure this is my first post, but I'm hung-over/bored and neglecting my job.
Anyway, I really like hearing people talk about Tim Melville because I have an intersting bit on him. He has a cute girlfriend that is a sophomore DG at Mizzou that comes over to the house to party and what not. But one night Melville was in COMO to see her and came by the house for one of our parties rocking a $200 Ed Hardy tee and freshly gelled golden locks. (see: man-crush)
So me and Q (55) being the fearless Royals fans you know us to be mustered up the guts to go talk to (hit on) him and told him how we love the Boys in Blue. And with all of our KC brothers raised our glasses and did a "Let's go Royals!" chant with him for a minute. It was an amazing experience. Really cool dude. Hopefully he pans out like he should and remembers those dumb frat guys that did the lets go royals chant with him.
Anywho, I'm glad I popped the blog cherry. I read all the time, just never post. Chi-town is on the horizon for me and 55. Tell Ryno hello and we'll see you guys this weekend.

KC Star noted that the players are very happy with Hillman. Props to Trey. Keep grinding. Torre, LaRussa, and Cox all struggled...and Hillman could very well still be a great major league manager. He's won everywhere he's been...aside from KC. I don't care what league it is (Japan).
Sam Mellinger had a headline that said "Players happy with Hillman returning". He then went on to quote ONE player, Mark Teahen. The same guy who has had a smile on his face for 4 years of losing, so yeah, if there is one guy would be happy - I could see it being him.
I wouldn't put any stock in that article, as what player in their right mind would say this, "I'm pretty upset about the news. He is pretty over-matched as a manager. Especially when he thinks his Bible is the key to his success and yes - he was quoted as saying that."
Nice to know Hillman is gonna be back regardless of imcompetence. 4 MORE YEARS! 4 MORE YEARS!
Gotta agree with DP here, you definitely don't want to be reading anything into that article about the players being "happy" with Hillman's return. I mean what are they gonna say? "Uh, no, I'm not happy. I hate him actually." They just found out this guy is going to be their manager next year, they have to act like they like him or they're fucked. Unless they are numerous and overwhelmingly sincere, player "votes of confidence" in their manager mean absolutely nothing*. Also, how hilarious is it that Mellinger could only actually find 1 guy to get a positive quote from? Priceless.
*There were even a few players saying they wanted Herm to stay. Does that mean we should've kept him?
Also, using La Russa and Torre's early struggles to justify Hillman's performance is totally bogus. That's the worst kind of anecdotal evidence there is. Tony la Russa and Joe Torre have literally nothing to do with Trey Hillman. The very fact that Dayton made a statement like that indicates 2 things:
1) He knows Hillman has sucked again this year (or else why compare him to other managers who "struggled" early).
2) the best justification he can find for keeping him is a weak comparison to hall of fame managers. In other words, he couldn't find any empirical evidence, so he had to go straight to the nonsense. No "these are the areas in which Trey has done well and here is the proof". Instead he goes with, "Hey, these guys sucked at first and they ended up good, so our guy who sucks is gonna end up good too!" Totally bogus line of thinking. Chiefs apologists do this ALL THE TIME*.
*2 recent examples:
1) Brodie Croyle- People were making lists of QBs who sucked at first and then turned it around. Troy Aikman, a few others. And that was supposed to be "evidence" that Croyle would be good as well. We all saw how that turned out.
2) Dorsey- idiot Chiefs fans insist Dorsey is a stud, and to "prove" it, they continually use the "evidence" that his stats (only tackles, not sacks) compare favorably to Warren Sapp and Albert Haynesworth's rookie seasons. So obviously that means Dorsey is gonna be awesome too, right? Uh, no. I could actually write a book on this one, so I'll stop before I bore you guys.
Basically the bottom line is that people in sports only break out the, "hey, look at these other guys who sucked" logic when there is literally nothing else positive to say. It's a pathetic, unsound argument that deserves no weight in any legitimate discussion.
final thought: Dayton moore sounds positively delusional when he talks about how Hillman is going to be one of the great baseball minds in the game. Seriously, I think the wheels have come off the bus.
Interesting perspective. I understand your point about not reading too much in to the article, but I do believe that it's too early to bash Hillman and call for his firing. In fact, there are some facts: He wont back to back titles in Japan. Is that America? No. There are a lot of differences, but he has won everywhere he has managed...that's a fact. I think he had maybe 1 or 2 years in the minors where he had a losing record.
I understand there aren't any 'real good facts' to support Hillman right now as a Manager in KC, and I don't know if he will be here for the long haul or not. I simply believe that we should support him and recognize that some successful managers struggled early on. Do you respect Maddon from the Rays? I do. And, he obviously respects Hillman as a baseball manager. He respects him a lot apparently by picking him for the All Star Game. Yes, I understand Tony Muser and Tony Pena were coaches in the All Star game....but it's an honor, and very respectful for Maddon to recognize him as 1 of 3 managers to coach in the game.
Muser in an all-star game? Thats hilarious. I wish I remembered it. I hardly remember anything about Muser, actually, but he was our manager for what, five years? Those were some forgettable years. Still, I can't help but think he'd be better than what we've had lately. Maybe not.
Hillman's Japanese success is what excited me about him at first, but that almost seems like a whole different world now. It's just hard for me to imagine this guy turning it around.
I read he walked out on a press conference when Dick Kaegal had the audacity to question him for not using Soria in any of the last 3 games, all games Soria arguably should have been used in. Then Hillman made some claim about Soria having 2 recent "major arm injuries". One of these was tommy John 7 years ago and one was the injury this year which Hillman had already said was more in Soria's head. Just bullshit logic from a bullshit manager if you ask me.
I heard Trey got grilled in the post-game interview tonight. Anyone got any intel on that?
Also I heard Mellinger did some of the grilling. Good for him. Mellinger is legit. It's gotten to the point where I'm not even a fan of the Royals, I'm just a fan of some of the wirters who cover them. I mean seriously, I like Mellinger and Rany more than any of our players.
I got to hear the interview. It consisted of a lot of double talk by Hillman and contradictions from previous statements - pretty typical really.
They asked him about what he would have done had Soria left the 8th with a tie, and would he have used him in the 9th. He said he would have had to ask Soria and see how he felt. He also said that Soria through 14 pitches so that could have been a problem. 14 pitches....14 pitches.....14 pitches......14 pitches. Can you believe that? He hasn't thrown in a week and we have an off day today and he would have had to think about this move.
The two major arm injuries comment was laughable. (1) Tommy John years ago - I am pretty sure he is over that one, and has been very effective. (2) shoulder soreness/dead arm this year - Major???? - what a retard.
That brings me to my main point of this post. I know it has been joked about but I think it is time to seriously consider what is going on here. (1) Trey Hillman is ACTUALLY mildy retarded, or (2) He is the most ignorant man alive, destined to try to prove his decisions correct, with still some slight form of retardation.
The first condition seems very plausible.
The second one also holds some water. It is almost like he is willing to do anything to prove that his way of handling the bullpen (and Soria) is correct. I wouldn't even be surprised if he purposely tried to over pitch Soria next week just to hurt him so the can rub it in the media's face. I really just don't understand him. It is ignorance and pride and it's worst, and he is the only one that can't see he is wrong (well, him and CABG)
9 in a row, BABY!!! just think if we have a 10 game winning streak, we'll be right back in it....errr....NOT.
Grapes
I just realized the Soria pitched and inning on tuesday in the double header. We were losing by 8 at the time. Doesn't change any of my opinions.
Grapes,
AP BREAKING NEWS REPORT:
A man whom idnetifies himself as 'Grapes' has attacked Trey Hillman via KcBullpenBoys.com. Grapes has questioned Hillman's tactics, and managerial ability via the blog, and carefully monitors each and every statment Hillman makes in an attempt to call him out. Grapes...or media bandwagon jumper as he's referred to has NO real baseball experience, but feels he knows more about how to manage a team than does Trey Hillman. Simply laughable. However, that's not all...perhaps Bob McClure is an idiot as well. Becuase Grapes never really played baseball, he fails to understand that pitching coahces have a very large amount of input in regards to decisions with the bullpen. In addition, Grapes fails to realize that this team simply isn't playing good baseball...and just maybe, maybe...it's not the Managers fault. Why doesn't anybody refer to last September when the Royals went on a run for the ages? Hillman managed some great bsaeball right? We were winning lots of baseball games!
Grapes, those types of post put you right in line with the 'media frenzy'. Have you thought about a career alongside Chris and Cowboy?
Ouch. I guess I am wrong. I apologize.
Get over yourself, CABG
To try and lighten the mood given the stink bowl that we're dealing with this year, are there any consensus #1 picks in the draft next year? Me thinks we'll be giving the Nats a run for their money.
Sub question:
Do baseball players have the worst style of any major professional sport? They all seem to have terrible taste in music (could someone please just come out to a good intro? We haven't had one since Jermaine Dye. All we get is butt-rock hit after butt-rock hit), aren't funny (uh oh...here comes another pie in the face!!!), and generally dress like tools (I've seen numerous Royals out and about in hideous gear..fanny packs and all...Mike Wood takes the cake with a matching rain slick/galoshes combo that had people laughing throughout the bar at the brooksider one night).
This is a very hasty generalization and I would offer that some guys like Zito, Lincecum and Utley seem cool but the pickings are slim. Thoughts?
Mark Grace is/was funny
Grapes,
That wasn't a personal attack. No need to say 'ouch'. We are all big boys here, and can take the heat. I'll get over myself...as soon as you get over bashing Hillman. Form your own opinions...don't just fall in to the media frenzy.
Trust me...I'm still here and I've felt the wrath of the bullpen boys more than anybody else. It's all part of the game and all in good fun. I apologize if that offended you.
Cabby - after a post like that, I think its clear to see why you get some "wrath" thrown your way.
Your delivery is...first class. Yeah, I think that is a good description.
Sweetums - I agree that baseball players today are kinda dweebs (See: Mahay, Ronald). Players back in the day were cool (Mantle, DiMaggio). I think Gregg Zaun is the last "cool" guy left.
